FAQs

🎭 About the Masks & Process

What style of masks do you make?

I specialize exclusively in authentic, Ponce-style Vejigante máscaras. These are traditional Puerto Rican masks known for their fiercely vibrant colors, smooth paper-mâché craftsmanship, and iconic multi-horned structures. Every mask is built from our single, adult-sized master mold.

Where are you located? Are the masks made in Puerto Rico?

While my family heritage is deeply rooted in Adjuntas and Ponce, Puerto Rico, the NJOY Estremera workshop is proudly located stateside in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Can I actually wear the mask, or is it just for decoration?

Both! When filling out your inquiry form, you can specify your preference.

  • Wearable Gear: I line the interior with comfort padding, ensure clear sightlines/ventilation, and attach secure straps.

  • Wall Decor: I pre-install a heavy-duty, balanced hanging mount so it sits beautifully flush against your wall.

  • Dual-Use: I can optimize it so you can wear it to Carnaval and hang it safely as a centerpiece when you get home.

💳 Ordering, Pricing, & Payments

How much does a custom mask cost?

Because each mask is a unique commission, pricing scales based on the number of horns and design complexity. My base tiers generally range from $250 to $300 for a classic 2-horn mask, $350 to $450 for a 4-6 horn carnival mask, and $550+ for complex, majestic multi-horn clusters.

What is your payment policy?

I require a 50% non-refundable deposit to secure your spot on the workshop calendar and purchase materials. The remaining 50% balance (plus any shipping fees) is due upon completion, right after I send you final photo approval of your finished mask.

Can I cancel my order or get a refund?

Because custom masks are completely tailored to your specific color choices and design specifications, all deposits and final sales are non-refundable. If you have any concerns when you receive your final photos, I will work closely with you to make reasonable adjustments before the mask leaves the workshop.

📦 Timelines, Shipping, & Pickups

How long does it take to make a custom mask?

Authentic papier-mâché requires meticulous layering, sculpting, drying time, and precise hand-painting. On average, a custom mask takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete from the date your deposit is paid. I will send you photo updates as your piece comes to life!

Do you ship? How do you ensure the horns don’t break?

Yes, I ship fully insured across the United States. I take extraordinary care when packing. Every máscara is securely suspended and heavily cushioned in a durable, heavy-duty box so the horns never touch the sides. Because we ship domestically from Virginia, you enjoy fast, reliable U.S. transit times.

Do you offer local pickup?

Yes! If you live in the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, etc.), we can coordinate a secure face-to-face handover at a public location. You can specify this in the contact form.

🧹 Care & Maintenance

How do I clean and take care of my mask?

  • Keep Dry: Papier-mâché is highly sensitive to moisture. Never store your mask in damp areas or leave it in a vehicle.

  • Sunlight: Display your mask away from harsh, direct sunlight to keep the acrylic colors from fading.

  • Cleaning: Dust it gently with a clean, dry makeup brush or microfiber cloth. Never use liquid cleaners or chemical wipes.
